“Every cut is a dialogue with the material. Learning begins when we start listening”
WOODTURNING COURSES
An immersive and complete learning experience in artistic woodturning
My woodturning classes are conceived as intensive, small-scale learning experiences where technical precision, material understanding, and personal research converge. They are not designed as short demonstrations or isolated skill trainings, but as structured yet flexible paths that allow each student to deepen their relationship with wood, tools, and form.
For those who come from abroad or are unfamiliar with this area of Italy, the classes are also designed to be logistically clear and accessible. From travel information to accommodation options, every aspect is organized to allow students to focus entirely on learning.
The goal is not simply to reproduce techniques, but to develop awareness: awareness of the material, of the gesture, of proportion, and of the decisions that lead from raw wood to a finished object.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Woodturning, in my approach, is both a technical discipline and a reflective practice. Every cut contains information; every piece of wood suggests limits and possibilities. Learning to listen to these signals is as important as mastering the tools.
During the classes, I work closely with each student to:
• build solid technical foundations
• understand the behavior of green and dry wood
• develop a conscious approach to form and proportion
• encourage an autonomous and personal design process
Teaching takes place directly at the lathe, through continuous dialogue, observation, and hands-on practice. Mistakes are treated as part of the learning process and often become starting points for deeper understanding.
THE STUDIO AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The studio is fully equipped with professional lathes and tools. All necessary equipment and materials are provided, so students do not need to bring their own tools unless they wish to work with specific personal equipment.
Classes take place in a quiet rural setting in the hills of Abruzzo, a region characterized by a strong relationship between landscape, craft, and daily life. The calm environment supports concentration and immersion in the work.
EQUIPMENT
Each participant will be provided with a smock, safety spectacles and a personal respirator mask. A set of woodturning tools and lathe accessories will be available for each participant for the duration of the course, with extra tools available if required.
It is advisable to wear comfortable sport/leisurewear, or hiking clothing, and closed comfortable footwear.

Typical four-day program
While the content is adapted to each group or individual, a four-day class generally follows this progression:
Day 1 – Foundations
Safety, body position, tool control, cutting mechanics, understanding the lathe and the wood. First exercises focused on clean cuts and surface quality.
Day 2 – Form and Control
Bowls and open forms. Developing consistency, reading grain orientation, controlling wall thickness, and refining curves.
Day 3 – Hollowing and Complexity
Introduction or refinement of hollow forms, tool strategies, internal proportions, depth control, and vibration management.
Day 4 – Finishing and Process Awareness
Surface refinement, sanding and finishing methods, drying processes, remounting techniques, and critical review of completed works.
This structure remains flexible and may shift according to the interests and progress of the students.
WHAT YOU WILL GAIN
By the end of the class, students typically gain:
• greater confidence and precision at the lathe
• a clearer understanding of wood behavior
• improved control over form, thickness, and proportion
• the ability to plan and execute a project independently
• a more reflective and intentional approach to making
The emphasis is on long-term growth, not on quick or purely decorative results.
APPLYING AND FURTHER INFORMATION
Participation is limited to ensure teaching quality. Prospective students are encouraged to contact me in advance to discuss their background, expectations, and preferred dates.
These classes are an invitation to slow down, focus, and engage deeply with the act of making — developing not only technical skill, but a more conscious and personal relationship with woodturning.
MEALS
Lunch is included on all class days and is prepared using local and seasonal products. It is a moment to pause, share experiences, and continue informal discussion about the work.
Coffee, water, and basic refreshments are always available at the studio.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is not included in the course fee, but several options are available within walking distance or a short drive from the studio.
Depending on availability, it is possible to stay in a nearby apartment shared with other participants, or in independent local accommodations such as B&Bs or small guesthouses.
Detailed information and recommendations are provided once the class dates are confirmed.
LOCATION AND TRAVEL INFORMATION
The studio is located in Cellino Attanasio (Teramo, Abruzzo – Italy).
Airports
• Rome Fiumicino (FCO) – approximately 2.5 hours by car
• Pescara (PSR) – approximately 1 hour by car
Public Transport
From Rome Fiumicino, the fastest and most practical option is by bus to Val Vomano or Teramo. From there, local transport or pickup can be arranged.
Students traveling from abroad are supported with clear travel instructions once the course is booked.
RECOMMENDATIONS
To fully enjoy your experience, we highly recommend renting a car for the duration of your stay, for several reasons:
While our village is beautiful, it has limited services (a small grocery store, a pastry shop, and a few bars), we also have two restaurants, one in the village ( 2-minute walk from my studio ) and the other 5 minutes by car. The nearest larger supermarkets and shops are about 10 minutes away by car.
A car will also give you the freedom to explore some of the incredible medieval villages in the area or to take a day trip to the Gran Sasso National Park, a must-visit destination for nature and mountain lovers. You can alternatively reach the sea in just 20 minutes for a swim.

No prior experience is strictly required. Beginners are welcome and guided step by step, with particular attention to safety, correct habits, and fundamental techniques. Students with previous experience will follow a more advanced and personalized path.
Is the course physically demanding?
Woodturning requires standing for long periods and controlled physical effort. The pace is adapted to each participant, with regular breaks. Please contact me in advance if you have specific concerns.
How many pieces will I complete during the course?
The number of completed pieces varies depending on complexity and experience level. The focus is on quality, understanding, and process rather than quantity.
What tools and materials should I bring?
All tools, machines, and materials are provided. You are welcome to bring personal tools if you wish to work with familiar equipment, but this is entirely optional.
In which language are the classes taught?
Classes are taught in English. Italian is also possible for Italian-speaking students.
Are finishes and sanding techniques included?
