Spalted Turkey Oak Hollow Form
Wood : Turkey Oak
Size: 20 × 20 × 15 h (cm)
This hollow form began as a piece of spalted turkey oak I pulled aside at the very last moment, rescued while I was splitting firewood for the stove. Its surface was already whispering something different: a delicate, almost fragile character shaped by time, fungi, and slow transformation.
The material suggested the direction. I followed its cues and leaned into a fluid silhouette, one that still carries echoes of ancient Greek pottery. It’s a shape I’ve explored before in my Roots series, and returning to it felt natural, as if the wood itself was asking for that lineage.
Working with spalted turkey oak is always a balancing act. The softness, the unpredictability, the way the grain breaks into pale veins and dark lines, it all demands care and patience. But in this piece, that delicacy becomes part of the story. The form flows gently upward, holding both movement and stillness, a contemporary gesture anchored in classical proportions.
A quiet, graceful shape born from a log that almost became firewood, and from a material that carries beauty precisely because it has been changed by time.
