Flattened Vessel — London Plane Burl

Size 20 x 20 x 9 H (cm) 

This vessel is turned from London plane wood reclaimed just outside my studio. It was originally destined for firewood, until a dense burl revealed itself at the core. That discovery changed its fate.

The form is deliberately low and flattened, allowing the burl to dominate the surface. The grain is compact, animated, and richly textured, with subtle variations that emerge gradually under changing light. The opening is restrained, encouraging the eye to move across the body rather than into the interior.

This piece is primarily about material: the quiet intensity of burl, its unpredictability, and the sense of contained energy it brings to an otherwise calm, grounded form.
