Ellipsoidal Vessel — London Plane with Burl Accents
Size 18 x 18 x 11 H (cm)
This vessel comes from the same block of London plane wood as its companion piece, salvaged from a tree growing directly in front of my studio. In this case, the burl appears only in small, concentrated areas along the sides, acting as accents rather than the main voice.
The defining feature here is the form: a gently elongated, ellipsoidal profile that feels both stable and in motion. The grain follows and reinforces this geometry, visually stretching the volume and emphasizing its quiet asymmetry. The result is a strong dialogue between shape and grain, where the wood actively participates in defining the final silhouette.
The surface is refined but not overworked, allowing the natural rhythm of the wood to remain legible. Subtle burl inclusions punctuate the smoother grain, adding depth without disrupting the overall harmony.
